Patricia Skalka is the author of Death Stalks Door County, Death at Gills Rock, Death in Cold Water, Death Rides the Ferry, and Death by the Bay, the first five books in the popular Dave Cubiak Door County Mystery series. The Dave Cubiak Door County Mysteries series is set in Door County, Wisconsin where the author herself lives. Skalka was awarded the Edna Ferber Fiction Award from the Council for Wisconsin Writers for Death in Cold Water. The bottom line is that this is a very good read. Patricia Skalka is an American author best known for the Dave Cubiak Door County Mysteries series. All the novels follow Dave Cubiak, a former. I found that a nice touch, and I very much enjoyed the characters portrayed by Skalka. Patricia Skalka was vacationing in Door County when she thought that it would be a perfect place to set a murder mystery. The majority of the action happens in southern Door County, which is not the tourist area. Well, these books are mysteries so of course something is off - badly off - and Cubiak's on the case. This should be a routine happening, but something seems off, so Cubiak keeps looking. He's at a local hotel having lunch with a friend when an elderly doctor, presenting at a medical conference, dies of a heart attack. This book starts out several years after the events of the first four, and Cubiak, the county sheriff, is married with a new child. Cubiak soon discovers that the institute has an unsavory history of experimentation on handicapped children. The matter is complicated when Francisca Delgado, a cleaning woman at the lodge, recognizes a photo on the wall as her brother, Miguel, who disappeared years earlier when he was taken away from home by doctors who promised to cure his Down syndrome. Melk’s death appears to be natural, but the unhelpful attitudes of the witnesses to his collapse arouse Cubiak’s suspicions. At the start of Skalka’s convoluted fifth Door County mystery featuring Sheriff Dave Cubiak (after 2018’s Death Rides the Ferry), Cubiak’s regular lunch date with a physician friend at Green Arbor Lodge is interrupted by screams coming from the nearby conference center, where Cubiak finds the 93-year-old director of the Institute for Progressive Medicine, Dr.
